How to pick watermelon?
The thought of sweet watermelon makes us giddy...but figuring out how to pick one out from the grocery store, not so much.
The sheer weight and size of a melon makes it a pretty high stakes purchase. You can buy a dozen apples and oranges, but with watermelon, you basically have one shot to get it right.
We’ve compiled the best tips we could find to help you pick the freshest, ripest watermelon your grocer has to offer:
Tip 1: Observe the field spot. This is the area on the outside of the watermelon that has been resting on the ground. You want to look for one that is more yellow, the darker the better, since that is an indication it stayed on the vine longer.
Melons with a field spot that are more white, or even nonexistent, are probably underripe since they haven’t had time to develop that yellowish color.
Tip 2: Knock for firmness. You see people slapping or banging their knuckles on watermelon? What they’re looking for is one that’s pretty firm so their knuckles/hands bounce off them. Soft skin usually means that the watermelon is overripe.
Tip 3: Go for weight. Find the watermelon that’s heaviest for its size. The more water there is in it, the juicier the watermelon is going to be.
Tip 4: Take a good look at the melon. Pick a relatively uniform-looking round or oval watermelon. Ones that are a bit more lopsided may not have gotten enough sun or water to help it fully ripen.
As for color, black dots are a good sign, since these are where sugar is seeping out and therefore an indication of a sweet melon.
What fruits go well with watermelon?
Watermelon by itself tastes wonderful, but it also pairs great with other delicious fruits as smoothie flavor combos, such as:
- Apple
- Blackberries
- Blueberries
- Lemon
- Lime
- Mango
- Pineapple
- Strawberries
- Cucumber
Can watermelon be frozen for smoothies?
Yes, you can freeze watermelon. Cut into cubes or scoop out with a melon baller. Remove seeds before freezing so you can just chuck 'em right into the blender when it's smoothie time.
If you choose to use fresh watermelon, include another frozen fruit or ice cubes to get that smoothie consistency.
