Is tea OK for the keto diet?

The first question you might have is: "Can I have tea on the keto diet?"

First off, most teas are a zero-calorie, zero-carbohydrate drink. Plus, it’s linked to a bunch of health benefits:

  • Packed with antioxidants that slow the breakdown of our body
  • Less caffeine than coffee, but will still give you a boost of energy
  • Linked to heart health and possible cancer prevention
  • Protects your teeth from cavities and doesn’t erode tooth enamel
  • Possibly aids with digestion

Seeing as how it’s a great alternative to water and can be served hot or cold, tea makes for an excellent keto-friendly beverage.

There are different types of tea you can choose from, such as:

  • Black teas, which contain more caffeine
  • Green teas, which have lower caffeine content and a slightly more earthy flavor than black teas
  • Herbal teas, which don’t have caffeine

Teas to avoid

But not all teas are the same. Keep in mind, the more natural the tea, the more likely that it will be fine to have on the keto diet.

You typically want to stay away from teas that contain dried fruit and sugars that up your carb count. For example, a sweet tea can contain 20+ net carbs - yikes!

If you want to incorporate more tea into your daily diet and would like to switch things up a bit, feel free to add some flavor with a sweetener such as:

  • Stevia*
  • Erythritol*
  • Monk fruit*
  • Swerve*

Bulletproof tea at night

There are no hard and fast rules that state you can’t have tea before you head to bed, but keep in mind that if you do want to have a drink, aim to have it at least 1-2 hours before when you plan to go to sleep.

This will reduce the likelihood that you’ll need to get up in the middle of the night to relieve yourself, which disrupts the quality of your sleep.

Herbal

You can also go for herbal teas as your beverage of choice before bed instead, if you are worried that the caffeine in non-herbal teas might keep you up.

An organic variety gift set* has flavors ranging from soothing mint to chamomile, which would be suitable as a nighttime beverage.
