Do veggie burgers taste like hamburgers?
Real hamburgers have a lot going on with fat and texture, which is what makes them satisfying to meat-eaters.
While it’s hard to replicate all these features with a veggie-based patty, it doesn’t mean you can’t find good vegetarian or plant-based contenders that have unique flavors and textures of their own that make them delicious and drool-worthy.
What are the ingredients of a veggie burger
You might surprised at the wide variety of ingredients that can be put in a veggie patty to make a tasty veggie burger. Here is a list of the veggie burger ingredients featured in this round up:
- Black beans
- Portobello mushrooms
- Sweet potato
So if you’re looking for variety, you’ve definitely come to the right place. Note that many of these ingredients also pack nutritional value, like protein with fewer carbs and calories.
How to keep vegetarian burger patties from falling apart
A common issue that people run into when making veggie burgers is keeping the patties together.
If you don’t have a good binder for your ingredients, then your vegetarian burgers will crumble or fall apart, which kinda takes away from the burger experience.
The most surefire way we’ve experimented with when creating these homemade patties is creating a flaxseed* "egg."
We like using this option since it requires only two ingredients, is simple to make, and doesn’t clash with whatever flavors you’re working with.
Here's the easy binding recipe:
- 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
- 3 tablespoon warm water, divided
Start with 2 tablespoons of water and mix it with the flaxseed for a minute to start making your "egg." Add more water little by little, until you get the consistency you want.
Too much water could actually ruin the binding ability, so we prefer to go with a slightly thicker consistency.
